"I need to compare Film with HD"
HD post production grading and effects should be factored into a comparison between film and HD. I am referring to delivering the required "look" or put anther way, the on screen production value a DP can deliver to the audience.
This goes way beyond the technical attributes of a camera.
The bang for buck that HD can deliver differs from film and it varies from project to project and size of budget. Sometimes HD delivers a superior look other times not.
"The budget is the look" ....an old film adage, is certainly also true with HD. Problem is that many DPs are uncertain as to what can be achieved in HD post .
So seek advice from a post house, remember that some post houses with telecine machines have a vested interest in you *not* shooting on HD!
At the end of the day the picture ends up on screen with an audience who are aware of the technical flaws of a poorly graded or out of focus shot, scratches and dust, but have great difficulty in appreciating film's superior colour palette and tonal range.
DPs shooting HD need close alliances with post houses, not made easy in some cities where the only post houses in town have telecine machines.
The real comparison goes far beyond what format is used at point of acquisition. From a producers point of view a major factor in determining wether to shot on HD is in the experence of the production manager making the comparison.
